Founded in 1941 by Ralph Hubbard Norton and his wife Elizabeth Calhoun Norton, the Norton Museum of Art is known for its approximately 7,000 pieces of art. It houses American, European, Chinese, and contemporary art, as well as photography. The museum’s collection also comprises 19th- and 20th-century paintings and sculptures, and the organization hosts a variety of special exhibitions, lectures, and tours.

One special exhibit scheduled at the museum is Pen to Paper - Artists’ Handwritten Letters from the Smithsonian’s Archives of American Art. Scheduled in 2017 from April 18 through July 2, this exhibit incorporates a selection of pieces from the Smithsonian’s Archives of American Art and explores the handwriting of artists’ written letters. These roughly 30 pieces come from people including Georgia O’Keeffe, Winslow Homer, and Frederic Edwin Church. One of the pieces is a 1964 letter from Philip Guston to Elise Asher, decorated with expressive doodles.
